ODINBoom®

The most advanced high-performing floating barriers for marine trash, ice booms, security, and public safety boat barriers.

ODINBoom® changes everything you thought you knew about floating barrier systems.

ODINBoom® HDPE floating booms are the next generation of barrier booms for dams and hydroelectric power plants. Worthington Products, Inc, the World’s leading floating boom barrier company was the first to bring this advanced co-extrusion technology to the large diameter floating barrier market. We are the industry first to offer a lifetime warranty in a marine barrier system.

With ODINBoom® technology, Worthington is able to offer a 50-year design life in a robust package to capture floating garbage, river debris, floating litter, ice, and more. ODINBoom is contributing to a cleaner environment by capturing tons of floating plastic, lake trash, and river trash. ODINBoom is a key technology augmenting ocean cleanup efforts as well as for effective public safety around dams solutions.

  • ODINBoom® HDPE is the most advanced material technology offering dam operators and dam safety engineers a reliable solution to contain floating debris, function as ice booms and to provide effective public safety around dams boat barrier systems.

    ODINBoom pontoons features include:

    - long-term durability with a 50-year pontoon service life.

    - exceptional impact resistance.

    - Smooth, non-stick, chemically resistant surface.

    - UV Stabilized.

    - Water-tight design.

    - Corrosion free.

    - Resistant to -140F

    - Internal EPS foam fill

    - Thick walled design

    - Will never require touch up surface treatments

  • ODINBoom® is made from one material, high-strength, 100% virgin HDPE polymers. But unlike all other HDPE production, the proprietary dual-extrusion ODINProcess results in a durable 4mm thick outer layer integrated with a 28mm thick internal carbon-black HDPE.

All of this is produced in a single, continuous pipe extrusion process. ONE Material - TWO Colors.

  • When it comes to intelligent spillway boom design, yellow beats black or orange booms hands down. Black HDPE cannot be seen on the water especially in low light conditions. Did you know that 8% of males and 2% of females are color blind? When they see an orange log boom, it may look grey or it might blend in with the background to them.

The color orange is only 63% as visible, when measured in brightness, as Yellow booms. In low light conditions such as dawn, dusk, or even on an overcast day, the orange booms will be hard to see until the last minute. Yellow is the brightest color on the spectrum and the safest color for any floating barrier boom installation where people may be on the water. It’s no wonder then that the Canadian Guidelines for Public Safety Around Dams rightly ONLY allow the use of yellow floating boom barriers.

ODINBoom® is not only designed to be tough, but it should also be visible. Forget about orange. YELLOW IS THE NEW ORANGE.

  • At the heart of every ODINBoom® system are pontoons with our lifetime warranty, made from tough, durable, co-extruded HDPE pipe. Each ODINBoom is capped with a unique fusion welding process. This process creates a joint that becomes stronger than the pipe itself. ODINBoom tailrace boat barriers, spillway safety barriers, headpond boom systems offer the best design for your hydroelectric or dam project. They are durable, low maintenance and do not require seasonal removal.

  • ODINBoom® floating barriers are designed with safety in mind. In developing ODINBoom we used advanced Flow-3D® modelling to determine how the booms float as surface velocity increases. The goal of any boom should be to maintain at least 30cm (12 inches) of freeboard as water velocity increases. This provides visibility from safety but also prevents debris from flowing over the top of the booms.

Any diameter less than 50cm (20 in) means freeboard quickly drops as surface velocity rises above 0.5m/sec (1.65 fps). 610mm boom designs provide the needed buoyancy to prevent boat passage and to prevent debris flows over the top of the boom.

ODINBoom is comes in. a standard 610mm (24 in) diameter and in individual pontoon lentghts up to 11.75m (39 ft).

  • ODINBoom® is not just durable but its unique construction provides multiple options for connecting boom segments.

    - Flange End to End. The most economical method of connecting boom segments. Individual pontoons are fabricated in lengths up to 11.75m (39 ft) with fusion welded flanged ends. Units can be connected end to end to form a continuous length, zero-gap, boom line for ease of installation.

    - Flanged Ends with Connection Plates: Individual pontoons are fabricated with fusion welded flanged ends in the same manner as the flanged end to end described above. However, rather than connect units together for a zero-gap configuration, high-strength, engineered steel end plates are attached to the ends of the flanges. Alloy chain is used to connect end plates to end plates (shown in image above).

    - Capped Ends with Exo-Skeleton Frame. Individual pontoons are fabricated with fusion welded flangeless flat end caps. Corrosion resistant steel rings are placed around the diameter of the booms to connect to submerged span cables or high strength steel channels.

  • ODINBoom® designs can include a range of options to suite your individual site needs. Options include:

    - Submerged rigid debris screens ranging from 30cm to 1.5m deep.

    - Submerged flexible skirts made from industrial rubber, durable Dynema netting, or permeable mesh. Flexible skirts are provided with positive ballast to prevent horizontal blow-up.

    - Permanent Fusion Graphics – Warning messages, Company Logo, Emergency Phone Numbers, Promotional Advertising.

USE CASES

Floating Debris & Trash

Floating debris, plastic in rivers, and lake trash damage our ecosystem, often end of as ocean garbage and create serious dam safety risks.   ODINBoom® floating barriers provide effective solutions to river trash and floating debris of all types.  Combine with sub-surface debris skirts and screens for enhanced debris control effectiveness.

Ice Boom Systems

The ODINBoom® ice boom protection barrier system is an example of our next-generation technology and is fast replacing the outdated legacy designs based on painted steel pontoons. Our HDPE ice boom pontoons are constructed from high strength, thick-walled, co-extruded HDPE material with a 50-year design life.

Our ice booms will never rust or corrode and will never require painting or post installation coating. The best news: they cost less than legacy style steel pontoon.

Public Safety Boat Barriers

Worthington’s first public safety boat barrier occurred on the Muskingum River in Southern Ohio in early 2001.  Since that time our booms have been saving lives and lower risk for dam owners worldwide.  ODINBoom® now allows dam safety engineers the ability to satisfy their boater safety needs in a 50-year design package.

Fish Guidance Systems

ODINBoom® pontoons are used in Worthington’s physical floating fish guidance systems to safely guide juvenile salmonoids, trout, and eel around river obstructions such as flood control and hydroelectric power dams.
